In the womb, the baby is always in contact with his mother’s body, no matter what position he takes. He is with her, in her, touching her, feeling her and more so as he grows and takes more space.
When a child is born, he does not only discover an overwhelming world as far as his senses are concerned but also a space, or rather an emptiness, where he is not constantly contained any longer.
Massage, the touch of loving hands, will help him overcome this feeling of vulnerability and exposure, it will help him feel safe and nurtured.
Children who are being massaged on a regular basis tend to develop a good level of communication and feel confident in their little bodies for they know their bodies well. They also learn from a very young age that it’s fine to look after oneself and that touch is essential to all human beings’ wellbeing.
In a few sessions, 4 is the best, you can quickly learn how to massage your baby, it then becomes a special time for both of you and for fathers who can also learn to enjoy massaging their babies. 10 minutes every day in a calm warm space, when baby feels happy to receive it, is sufficient.
Massage can also help babies calm down if their energy is high, and it can help with the, often difficult, learning and beginning of the digestive system.
Baby Massage helps babies:
• Calm down when their energy is high
• Get used to their digestive system in providing release
• Feel secure and happy in their bodies
• Sleep
• Develop a special bonding time with mum and dad on a regular basis
• Find a way out for their, sometimes, overwhelming emotions
Group sessions (6 to 8 mothers/babies maximum): 4 sessions of 1 hour for 60 euros at Espace Bamboo (www.espacebamboo.be)
